Day 11 of the 28 in 28 - On Call

Simply put, I love painting sleeping cats on phones. I've visited this subject before and for some reason, am not bored of it yet... a series within a series, it started with me exploring the concept of visual idioms - I painted Cat Call, Duck Tape and Rabbit Ears.. Then, the subject of a sleeping cat on a phone called me back again, and I painted another, thinking it would satisfy me.  But, not yet.  To me, there is much more to explore here. This one was my try at a black cat on a white phone. I love the challenge of painting black animals as their fur has so many hidden colors... the same can be said about white objects, particularly white shiny objects.  I was captivated by all of the reflected colors in the phone and how they interacted with the 'hidden' colors in the cat. :)

The hardest part of the cat call series if naming them!  "On Call" may just be a temporary title until I come up with something a little more interesting.

Scroll down to see the 1st two in the series and thank you.

Ringing True

A new Vintage Phone! I love painting these old phones.  Their lines, the way the material (what are they made of anyway?) reflects and absorbs light, the nostalgia of them... I just love them!  The crop of an image is also important to me.. When you crop an image to show only part of it, the negative space becomes that much more important.  And lastly, I had fun with the cast shadow in this pic.  I think it really adds depth...

I have had some of my artist friends ask me what my preferred brushes are to paint with.  I would have to say my go to brush is the Masterstroke bristle brushes put out by Dick Blick.  I prefer flats and use sizes 2,3,4 and 6 extensively.  They are pictured below and I used them almost exclusively to paint this picture.  Also pictured is a small fan brush, of no particular make... just a cheapy one that I picked up at a local art supply store, but one of my necessary brushes definitely!

Day 26 - Nanny's Phone

Today's painting is what I consider an iconic part of... well, humanity in general....  Just like the Volkswagen Beetle, I love the look and style of old phones like this.  As soon as I showed my husband, he said..."Now that takes me back to my grandmothers house and the telephone table..." and the story went on from there.  I think it is so cool how an image can transport you to a place and time that holds strong memories.
